China’s courier industry tops the world charts delivering 20 billion packages in 2015

The State Post Bureau of China announced China’s package deliveries reached 20 billion parcels last Friday, ranking it the top in the world by highest consignment volume, Beijing Business Today reported on Sunday.

Dividing consignments by the population of China or 1.4 billion Chinese, annual package deliveries amount to 14 consignments per person.

Han Ruilin, a news spokesman for the State Post Bureau and the Head of Market Supervision, said that China’s courier industry has seen immense growth from the beginning of the 12th five-year plan in 2012, with average annual growth rate of 54.6%.

Overall, the total volume of package deliveries from January to November this year reached 18.25 billion, with year-on-year growth of 48.1%. Total income for the courier industry has reached RMB 245.62 billion, with year-on-year growth of 34.9%.

According to Han, organizational reform and favorable policies have contributed to the achievements made in the courier industry. By 2017, over 200 logistics parks were newly built or began construction. There are three independently operated airlines and more than 78 all-cargo aircrafts owned by courier companies.

China’s parcel consignments amounted to ten billion for the first time in October 2014. It was reported that a total of 14 billion packages delivered for all of 2014, making China the largest market for couriers in the world.

Real-name verification for package deliveries came into effect in China at the beginning of November, with closer inspection of individual parcels accompanying.
