Leaks suggest Xiaomi Mi 5 will hit the market on February 22 priced higher than the iPhone 6S

Leading Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi is rumored to be launching the Xiaomi Mi 5 on February 22, Beijing-based tech media website Zhongguancun Online reports on Friday.

Weibo users have leaked alleged invitations to the online broadcasting of the Xiaomi Mi 5 announcement event. The pictures suggest the launch date will be February 22.

Xiaomi Co-founder and Senior Vice President Li Wanqiang previously confirmed on Chinese social network Sina Weibo that the company will release the Xiaomi Mi 5 in February. There has been as yet, no official confirmation of the precise date from Xiaomi.

Given the 2016 Mobile World Congress, the world’s largest gathering for the mobile industry, will take place on February 22, Xiaomi looks poised to announce the Xiaomi Mi 5 at the congress, suggests Chinese tech media website TechWeb.

Chinese third-party e-commerce retailer Gearbest has already listed the Xiaomi Mi 5 on its website with attached specs.

Gearbest claims the The Mi 5 will pack a Snapdragon 820 processor, a 5.2-inch QHD display, 4GB of RAM, a 3,600 mAh non-removable battery and a 16 MP/8 MP camera combo. Powering the device will be the latest version of Xiaomi’s MIUI Android-based operating system and the device will be offered in three different colors: black, white and gold.

Internal storage options for the device will include: 16GB for USD 625, and 64GB for USD 728 – making the device more expensive than the iPhone 6S. Prior to the announcement of the Xiaomi Mi Note, Xiaomi typically priced its flagship devices at RMB 2000 (USD 303). This latest release marks a complete break with Xiaomi’s famous pricing policy.
