Huawei and Youku Tudou to launch 4K joint lab and 4K content service platform

Chinese technology giant Huawei and China’s largest online video provider Youku Tudou have launched a 4K joint lab and a 4K content service platform, Tech channel of NetEase News reported on Thursday.

4K technology refers to a display device or content that has a horizontal resolution of approximately 4,000 pixels. The newly launched lab will focus on research into the video experience evaluation system U-vMOS, and 4K video coding and decoding technologies H.265 and H.266, with an aim to promote 4K technology.

Yao Jian, CTO of Youku Tudou, said the company has been developing 4K since 2015, and adopted the H.265 video coding technology and streaming media technique DASH to improve the visual and acoustic experience for audiences. Youku Tudou aims to build a new 4K ecosystem with 4K content from itself, and hardware and technology from Huawei and Sony Corporation.

Huawei introduced the video experience evaluation system U-vMOS to set the standard for 4K. It provides a solution to transmit 4K content to improve the audience experience, and a solution to store 4K video.

Huawei and Youku Tudou have also introduced a 4K content service platform called “4K Garden” with Sony Corporation and Beijing Television Station. The platform has 4K video cameras, pre-production and post-production teams. It will provide content partners with services including content collection, production, selling, transcoding, and distribution.

Wu Yi, the president of 4K Garden, said the platform will produce more than 3000 hours of 4K content per year from 2017.

A report from leading global research institute IHS says that 24% of Chinese households will have 4K TVs in 2019, and one-third of US families will have 4K TVs, Tech channel of Tencent News reports.
