A major Chinese smartphone manufacturer OPPO is going to launch its new R9 and R9 Plus smartphones in Beijing on March 17. Unconfirmed specs on the two phones were recently leaked online.
The most notable feature is that both the R9 and R9 Plus may have a 16 megapixel front-facing camera, compared to their 13 megapixel and 16 megapixel main camera respectively. Also, both of them may have a built-in beautification camera app, Beautify 4.0, which would provide users with multiple modes to customize their preferred effects. With Beautify 4.0 and the 16 megapixel front-facing camera, these two OPPO smartphones look like they’re designed for selfie fanatics.
“Good selfie beautification is more of a skin care product than makeup, which enhances your beauty in a natural way,” said OPPO via its Weibo account on Tuesday.

OPPO was founded by Tony Chen in the southern Chinese city of Dongguan in 2004. The company produces smartphones and audio-visual equipment, and provides Internet services to global markets including China, America, Russia, Europe and Southeast Asia.
The company has made a series of smartphones notable for their camera performance, including Ulike U701, N3 and R7. According to a report by market intelligence provider TrendForce in January, OPPO ranked 8th among the world’s top ten smartphone vendors based on market share in 2015, and a February report from American research firm IDC showed that OPPO ranked fourth in shipments among China’s top five smartphone vendors in Q4 2015.
