At an entrepreneur summit on Saturday, the CEO of leading Chinese smartphone company Xiaomi released his first live stream, announcing that the Mi Max “phablet”, so called because its screen size is an intermediate between the largest smartphones and smallest tablets, and Mi Band 2 smart wearable device will be launched on May 10 and that more surprises can be expected.
Lei then posted on Sina Weibo about how fun it was for him to do his first live stream at the summit.
“Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg once said that he was obsessed with live streaming. I absolutely agree with him. I recommend everyone try live streaming with Xiaomi. I live streamed for two hours in a row, so tired! Join us for the next live streaming! :)” he wrote.
In the broadcast, Lei showed off the upcoming Mi Max. Though the image wasn’t clear enough, some specs of the Mi Max could be confirmed. Mi Max has a screen larger than 6 inches. On the front of the smartphone, there is no “MI” logo visible, a logo usually appearing on all Xiaomi smartphones. Additionally, the fingerprint scanner should appear on the rear of the phone, not the front.
On Monday, a number of websites began circulating rumors professing to be the detailed, but unconfirmed, specs of the Mi Max. These included a 6.4-inch screen, a 15-megapixel rear-facing camera, a 4.8-megapixel front-facing camera, a 1.8 GB RAM and 10GB of storage memory. As for the price, it may be under RMB 2000 (USD 307).
Lei may have chosen to live stream the teaser video as a means to market Xiaomi’s new live streaming app that the company announced it plans to launch last Friday. Xiaomi’s competitors in China’s mobile live streaming market include PandaTV, LanjTV and Ingkee, which are already available in the market.
