Tencent to offer employees death benefits

Chinese tech giant Tencent looks up to Google, and is offering employee death benefits. They will pay the family of a decreased employee half of their salary for 10 years, according to Fang Huiling, the assistant manager of Tencent’s compensation and benefits department, as reported by Sina Tech reported.

Google introduced its employee death benefits in 2012, offering to pay the spouse of a staffer dead from an accident half of the staffer’s salary for 10 years, with their child each receiving USD 1,000 per month until the age of 19, or until the age of 23 if they are full time students.

In the case of Tencent, if the diseased staffer has more than one child, for each extra child, there would be an extra 12 months’ salary added to the compensation. In addition, considering that there might an urgent need of money for the family of a diseased staffer, Tencent offers to pay part of the compensation in one go and put the rest of it into a trust company.

Other than death benefits, Tencent employees also have home loans free of interest, various types of commercial insurance, 30 days’ paid sick leave each year, and regular teeth cleaning, physical exam and physiotherapy free of charge.

Nevertheless, Weibo netizen Darren-Xie commented, “I’d say the employee death benefits carries a message that goes: Don’t be afraid of working to death, because I’ll take care of your kids and family.”
