Pimax VR, a 4K PC VR headset maker, announced on Monday that it had raised tens of millions RMB (a few millions USD) in Series Pre-A financing from Ivy Capital, Chinese tech media 36kr.com reported.
The additional capital will be used in R&D of new products and accessories to improve user experience.
Founded in 2014, this Shanghai-based startup makes VR headsets and accessories that set new records for the industry with high resolution and light weight, with the “π” headset being the clearest ever VR headset.
The company also announced that they would produce exclusive VR headset editions for some customers, in addition to its already existing business of consumer edition products. The exclusive editions will have access to more VR content and more methods of data transmission.
The VR headset of Pimax VR is named “π”. It features 4K display for PC VR. This impressive screen resolution will significantly improve the VR viewing experience. Leading PC VR headsets – such as Oculus Rift and HTC Vive – feature a combined resolution of 2560 x 2400 pixels, which is between 2K and 4K. The Pimax VR headset features a 3840 x 2160 pixels resolution display. It started a crowdfunding campaign on April 14, and the crowdfunding price was set at RMB 1,699.
“Pimax VR is the only one that can make a 4K PC VR headset in the market .”said Weng Zhibin, the company’s Founder and CEO. “The reason behind our technology expertise is that we used to make VR headsets for hospitals in the medical industry, where standards are higher than those of the ‘Big Three’” . By ‘Big Three’, Wang Zhibin was referring to Oculus, HTC and Sony.
Other specifications are also outstanding. It is quite light at 220g, with 110-degree field of view. In addition, its headsets are equipped with dual gyros, and its latency is 18ms.
