Drivers using ride-hailing platforms in China must pass exams and register with the authorities to continue taking passengers, according to regulations published on Friday by China’s Ministry of Transport.
The regulations will come into effect in October. Didi Chuxing said on Sunday that they have been checking drivers on the platform, and clearing out the people who will not meet requirements, according to reporting by the Beijing Morning Post.
According to the regulations, from the first of October, ride-hailing drivers must pass both the national exam and the local exam to be qualified for registration. The registration will be valid for three years. In addition, drivers must have at least three years’ driving experience and no history of drugs, violence, or drunk driving.
Didi has called for the government to introduce some innovation to the examination process, it said in a statement. Didi said that it would be convenient if the drivers could access recommended training materials online, or possibly take the exams online as well.
China legalized ride-hailing services in late July, yet the legalization will officially come into effect this November. Detailed regulations are on their way, both on a nationwide scale and at a local level.
For Didi, China’s largest ride-hailing platform, and its over 14 million registered drivers, more adjustments are expected to follow.
