China’s second largest e-commerce platform JD.com and news aggregator giant Toutiao on Tuesday announced that they had reached a new strategic cooperation agreement. Toutiao users will now be able to buy JD.com products on the Toutiao App.
Their cooperation agreement was called the “Jingtiao Jihua”, or the “JD-Toutiao Project” in English.
JD.com will put an online shopping entry called “Jingdong Temai”, or JD Special Sales in English, into the Toutiao App. Second, Toutiao will help JD.com and businesses on JD.com with targeted advertisements, based on Toutiao’s personalized data recommendation ability.
According to Xu Lei, vice-president of JD.com, the importance of the agreement lies in JD.com’s ability to share the users of Toutiao. Toutiao users will be able to order products on JD.com and make payments from within the Toutiao App. JD.com will also be able to recommend products to customers more precisely.
JD.com has previously launched a project to open its product supply chain, data and financial services to mobile apps. Users of such mobile apps can more easily find the products that they might be interested in, without the need to search for the products themselves.
Toutiao is a personalized news and information recommendation app launched in August 2012. By the end of July 2016, Toutiao had 530 million activated users, 130 million monthly active users, and 55 million daily active users, according to news website Sohu.com.
According to a report by Sina Tech on Tuesday, Toutiao users spend an average of 76 minutes per day on the Toutiao App. Toutiao’s total pageviews reach 1.9 billion per day, among which 1.8 billion were from articles posted on officially registered Toutiao accounts.
