Tencent’s USD 300 Ying drone is available for preorder

The Ying drone, co-produced by Tencent and drone maker ZEROTECH, is available for preorder on its website. Currently the site only has a Chinese version. The RMB 1,999 (USD 300) drone has a 13 megapixel camera and can shoot video at 4K resolution. It can fold up neatly to be carried in a bag.

The name “Ying” translates to “Shadow” in English.

Designed for travel, the 425g Ying drone can follow you wherever you go, or fly according to a designated route. Its app synchronises photos to the user’s phone, enabling easy sharing of photos with family and friends on WeChat. Offered in two colors, black and white, the drone will be officially launched on October 20.

Unlike DJI Mavic, which has a separate controller, the Ying drone works with a iOS/Android app. The app enables motion control, during which the drone mimics the motion of the phone. Its battery lasts for 15 minutes, and the drone automatically returns when the battery is low.

Given its low price – as compared to the GoPro Karma or the DJI Mavic, which hover at around the USD 1,000 price level – and backed by tech behemoth Tencent, the Ying drone will most likely find its place in the market.
