Who should pay to fix the iPhone 6 Plus screen flickering problem?

Smartphone maker Apple announced on Thursday the launch of the Multi-Touch Repair Program for the display flickering issue of the iPhone 6 Plus, a problem that a number of iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus users have recently been complaining about.

The announcement admitted that “some iPhone 6 Plus devices may exhibit display flickering or Multi-Touch issues after being dropped multiple times” and said that iPhone 6 Plus devices that are showing those problems can be repaired for a price of USD 149 – so long as the screen isn’t cracked or broken, and the phone is is “in working order”.

Chinese netizens questioned why the service is limited to the iPhone 6 Plus, when some iPhone 6 users also encountered similar issues; others shared their previous experiences of having the displays repaired. Only a few posed the question: who is to blame for the issue?

Apparently, the notice on Apple’s site shows the company’s stance that the problems are due to inappropriate methods of “using” the iPhone, i.e. dropping it on a hard surface multiple times.

In addition, issues do not stop at the display – the battery seems to be problematic as well, with many users recently complaining that the iPhone 6 Plus are automatically turning off with 20% power remaining in the battery.

So is the design of the phone itself really impeccable?

Regarding the issues and the reaction on Apple’s side, we handpicked some comments from Chinese social media sites Weibo and the Quora-like app Zhihu. There are netizens demanding that Apple fix this iPhone problem. Others shared their awkward experiences and solutions.

A netizen named “Bgjfcnn” reported that his iPhone touch pad started acting strange, and he thought it was because he downloaded some damaging apps. “Turns out it wasn’t my fault. Lucky me!” he wrote.

“Last October, I bought an iPhone 6S which powered off with 50% battery life at 10 degrees Celsius. This September, I dragged myself in to grab another brand-new iPhone 6S exchanged from the Apple Store, my fourth one. I’m so fed up,” wrote a netizen named “Chenqi”.

Netizen “Yanggu” wrote with joy that he found the final solution. “I have wisely switched to using Huawei. Problem solved!”

“Apple is trying to tell you: It’s time to buy an iPhone 7!” Nideshouji wrote.
