There’s 25 days to go before we bid goodbye to 2016, and China’s search engine giant Baidu released on Monday a list of the top ten search requests for 2016. It gives us a glimpse of the year’s events that grabbed the attention of Baidu’s 660 million monthly active users.
1. The 2016 national “Gaokao” college entrance examinations
The “Gaokao”, the primary means of being admitted to university in China, is held from June 7 to June 8 each year. In 2016, 9.4 million students took the exam, according to the Ministry of Education.
2. Flooding in Wuhan
In July, a catastrophic flood hit Wuhan, a city of 10 million people in central China, paralyzing traffic, closing schools and bringing industry to a halt.
3. A Hurricane hits Jiangsu
In June, hurricane-force winds and pounding rain killed 99 people and injured over 800 hundred people at Yancheng, in China’s eastern province of Jiangsu.
4. An earthquake hits Taiwan
In February, a 6.7-magnitude earthquake hit Kaohsiung in southern Taiwan, causing the deaths of over a hundred people.
5. A new crackdown on prostitution begins in Dongguan
The local government initiated a 44-day long campaign to crack down on prostitution in the southern city of Dongguan around the 2016 Chinese New Year.
6. The 2016 National People’s Congress and Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference – AKA the “Two Sessions”
2016 marked the first year of China’s 13th Five Year Plan. Held in March, the 2016 “Two Sessions” discussed the implementation of the plan for the coming year and other major issues concerning China’s political and economic situation.
7. Live ammunition drills in the South China Sea
From July 19th to 21st, the Chinese Navy held its largest ever live ammunition drill in the South China Sea. The drill involved more than 100 naval vessels, dozens of aircraft and a number of electronic warfare units.
8. Shanghai Disneyland opens
Shanghai Disneyland opened in June to much fanfare, becoming the first Disney park in mainland China, and the third in Asia. The resort received over four million visitors in four months after opening.
9. The Shenzhou 11 manned Spacecraft launches
In October, China successfully launched the Shenzhou 11 spacecraft, its sixth manned space flight mission. The craft carried two astronauts to the Tiangong-2 space laboratory for a 33-day mission to test the laboratory’s life support systems, make observations, and gain space experience. It returned to earth on November 17th, following the successful accomplishment of the mission.
10. Elections in Taiwan
As Chairman of the Democratic Progressive Party, Tsai Ying-wen won the island’s leadership election in January, becoming the first female leader of Taiwan.
In addition, the top 10 searched global events are: the South China Sea Arbitration ruling, the 2016 US Presidential Election, the coup in Turkey, Brexit, the Zika virus outbreak, the G20 Summit, the Terror Attack in Nice, the Hijacking of EgyptAir Flight 181, the Park Geun-hye Corruption Scandal, and the North Korea Nuclear Test.
