Koreans use mobile apps for 200 minutes every day

App Annie, a U.S. based mobile app intelligence platform, recently released a report that analyzes user mobile app usage. In the first quarter of 2017, Koreans spent the most time on their Android apps, almost 200 minutes every day. They are followed by Brazil, Mexico and Japan based on the time spent on apps.

App Annie reported that smartphone users in all countries surveyed use at least nine apps a day while they might use more than 30 a month. The survey also found that iOS users tend to use apps more than Android users.

The apps in the Utilities and Tools category are the most popular as there are several default apps, pre-loaded in the phone including Safari on iOS and Google on Android. Following those are Social networking (iOS), Communication (Android), Social (Android) apps.

When it comes to gaming apps, Android users use 30 percent more of these than iOS users. However, in terms of revenue from the apps per user, iOS users outranked Android users in the game category. Country wise, one in four Korean spends more time on gaming apps.

Globally, apps in the data and productivity category are opened about four times a day on average, while financial apps run for less than a minute.

An important point noted in the App Annie report is that the run count and usage time of an app means different things and should be treated as such.

Lee Sang-jae, Director of App Annie Korea, said, “In 2016, mobile app usage time was 1 trillion hours. Looking at the data of January 2017, the same trend is expected to continue in 2017 as well. The key to mobile apps’ survival is to have a way to incentivize users to continue using their apps.”
