Financing status: Undisclosed amount for Pre-Series A round in 2017
Bengaluru-based foodtech startup, MonkeyBox, has raised an undisclosed amount for Pre-Series A round from Blume Ventures, NB Ventures, Nspira, and a few angel investors.
MonkeyBox was founded in 2015 by Sanjay Rao and Sandeep Kannambadi. Rao and Kannambadi previously worked as CEO and CTO, respectively, of Sportingmindz Technology, and were both architects for Wipro Technologies.
Monkeybox delivers breakfast, lunch, and snack meal boxes to schoolchildren throughout Bengaluru. The startup delivers the meals 30 minutes prior to mealtime directly to schools. Meal boxes provide vegetarian food specially designed by nutritionists, and prepared with high quality ingredients including fresh vegetables and fruits. The variety of flavors offered include those of north Indian, south Indian, pan-Asian, and continental cuisines. Monkeybox has claimed to supply more than 1500 meals per day to over 85 schools in Bengaluru, catering to children between the ages of 3 and 18 years-old.
The startup will use the newly raised investment to expand into more schools, hire new employees, and launch future marketing campaigns. Co-founder and CEO, Sanjay Rao, said that this round of funding will help them start operations for their two new kitchens in Thanisandra in the north and Kudlu Gate in the east. He also said that they are aiming to cover 75% of Bengaluru with the goal of reaching 12,000 subscriptions by the end of the 2018 academic year.
MonkeyBox previously raised an undisclosed seed round led by Blume Ventures in November 2016. On May 30th, 2017, the startup acquired Delhi-based cold-pressed juice manufacturer and delivery company RawKing for an undisclosed amount.
Other foodtech startups in India include Wegan Foods, Innerchef, Yumlane, Faasos, Sattviko, Tpot, etc.
