Online sports and fitness activity discovery portal Sportobuddy, which is operated by Locobuddy Mobile Technology Pvt. Ltd, has raised USD 1.5 million for a seed funding round from former Indian Premier League team owner Mehul Shah.
Sportobuddy was founded in 2015 by Sandeep Madhavan and Sunil Kukadia. Madhavan worked previously as an industry lead at Adobe, while Kukadia worked as a technical advisor at food startup Culinary Cart. Both also previously worked at Freemont Digital, a digital marketing agency.
Sportobuddy is a web and app-based startup that creates a social sports community in which users can book venues, connect with coaches, and discover local sporting events. It aggregates information about local indoor & outdoor sports, fitness activities, as well as sporting events based on the geographic location of the user. Users can book matches, sign up for coaching hours, or join an array of sports activities on the platform. The platform also allows users to purchase sports related apparel, accessories, and equipment online, or it can help users find an offline store.
The startup will use the newly raised capital to accelerate the brand’s digital initiative and reach out to a broad base of new users.
Other players in India’s sports and fitness online platform sector include FiTraQ, Growfitter, Fitnapp, FitMeIn and Fitternity.
