Chairman of Bluehole, Byung-Gyu Chang, was appointed Chairman of Korea’s 4th Industrial Revolution Committee under the Presidential Organization by the State Council on August 16.
Bluehole is a video game developer whose products include Tera and Playerunknown’s Battlegrounds. Chinese gaming giant, Tencent, is reported to have invested USD 61 million in the South Korean company after its acquisition invitation was declined by the latter.
The 4th Industrial Revolution Committee is a privately led presidential organization that presents the direction for the nation, mainly in terms of overall changes in the economy and society to adapt to the fourth Industrial Revolution.
Byung-Gyu Chang, Chairman of Bluehole, is also the founder of the internet community, Neowiz, and the search engine, Firstsnow. He is also the founder of BonAngels, an early stage venture capital firm based in Korea.
The committee is comprised of 20 civilian members, including the Chairman, Byung-Gyu Chang, Jung-Wook Lim (Head of Startup Alliance), Hyung-Chul Chu (CEO of SBA) and five government officials. Mi-Ok Moon, the science and technology assistant to the presidential secretariat will be the assistant administrator for this committee.
The committee will be operated based on the private sector but in order to collect diverse opinions of ministries, non-governmental ministries will be able to attend the meetings when discussing related issues.
The committee will be responsible for discussing comprehensive national strategies in relation to the fourth Industrial Revolution, and reviewing the implementation plans and performance of each ministry. In addition, overall issues related to the fourth Industrial Revolution, such as technology development and data, building network infrastructure, spreading intelligent public services, fostering new industries and services, improving legal systems and regulation, social innovations like employment and welfare, and education innovation will be covered.
The committee will hold official meetings and committee meetings starting from September 26 at Gwanghwamun, Seoul.
