Delhi-based online parenting startup Baby Destination has raised USD 313,000 from micro venture capital fund GEM Partners and Tariq Khan, a New York City-based angel investor.
The newly raised capital will be allocated toward internal growth and for hiring in the key areas of technology and product development, community management, business development, and marketing and sales, according to the founders.
Baby Destination is an online parenting portal operated by BD Parenting Infotech Pvt. Ltd. Within Baby Destination’s online community, parents and parents-to-be can share and discuss parenting experiences, strategies, and product recommendations. The startup claims to have a Facebook network in excess of three million parents and a WhatsApp peer-to-peer community spanning more than 4,000 parents.
Baby Destination was launched in 2016 by Tamanna Dhamija and Tarun Dhamija, an entrepreneur couple. Tamanna holds an MBA from the Management Development Institute, India, and Tarun is a graduate of Columbia University. Both are CFA charterholders. Tamanna previously worked at Merrill Lynch and General Motors Asset Management; she is also President and co-founder of Doctors For You-USA, a non-profit to help underprivileged children get treatment surgeries for congenital heart diseases in India. Tarun has past experience with Deutsche Bank and Citigroup.
As a result of development and urbanization, an increasingly large number of Indian parents are seeking online communities for parenting information, socializing, and consumerism. As such, India’s maternity and parent sector has witnessed significant growth and competition. Other players in the digital parenting area include The Moms Co., Mycity4kids, Hopscotch, BabyonBoard, Kidstoppress, and FirstCry.
