Gurgaon-based food tech startup Biryani By Kilo has reportedly raised between USD 763,000 and USD 1.5 million in a pre-Series A funding from a group of existing investors as well as new individual investors.

Existing investors included Rohit Chand and his son Ashish of AxisCades Engineering Technologies Ltd., both of whom participated in the round through their family fund.

New investors included Kunal Khattar, a partner at Noida-based investment firm advantEdge Partners; Manish Vij of Vun Network; Harish Bahl of Smile Group; StartUp Equity Partners, a boutique investment banking and consulting firm founded by investment bankers Neeraj Batra and Gunit Chadha; Thapar Group; and Myron Ferro, the former business head of Cleartrip; among others.

Biryani By Kilo was founded in 2015 by Kaushik Roy and is operated along with Vishal Jindal, who joined the startup early last year. Roy is well experienced in the food industry and has previously worked as a C-level executive at various food companies such as Zooropa Food, Daily Bread Gourmet Foods, Global Franchise Architects, etc. Jindal, an alumnus of the London School of Economics and Political Science, previously worked as board advisor at Ecosystm, a technology research and advisory firm. He was also the founder & director of Carpediem Capital Partners, an India-focused private equity company.

Biryani By Kilo is an app-based, Indian Biryani-focused food ordering and delivery startup. Biryani is a popular Indian rice dish. Users can order biryani delivery in a variety of types such as Hyderabadi (Kutchi), Lucknowi (Pukki), and Kolkata style — all prepared in individual earthenware containers.

Earlier in February, Biryani By Kilo raised around USD 380,000 in angel funding from a clutch of investors.

The startup will reportedly use the investment to expand within India’s domestic market.
