Recent leaks suggest telecom giant Huawei will be the new manufacturer for Google’s flagship Nexus smartphone the ‘Nexus 6P.’

As photos went viral on China’s Internet today, multiple leaks suggest Google will release two new Nexus products at its Sept. 29 launch event: the premium-priced Huawei manufactured Nexus 6P and the lesser-priced LG manufactured Nexus 5X. This will be the first time that a manufacturer from China has produced a Google Nexus smartphone.

The yet-to-be-launched Nexus 6P is slated to be the higher-end Nexus release and will likely come stock with the latest version of Google’s Android operating system, ‘Marshmallow.’ Tencent Tech reports the phone will feature a metal unibody, a 1440×2560 resolution 5.7 inch screen, a Snapdragon 810 processor, a 3450mAh battery and a USB Type C connector.

The price of the Nexus 6P 32G is reported to be USD 499, much lower than the Motorola-produced current model, the Nexus 6 at USD 649. The Nexus 6P is slated to first be released exclusively through the Google Store in the U.S., the U.K., Canada, Ireland and Japan. As is the case with most Google products, the Nexus 6P will likely not be available in China.

Google has previously contracted HTC, Samsung, LG and newly-acquired Motorola to produce its Nexus line of smartphones. Other prominent releases by Chinese manufacturers for Google have included relatively recent Chromebooks produced by Haier and Hisense.

Huawei’s reputation as a smartphone maker is rising internationally. Thanks in no small part to the strong performance of its Ascend Mate 7, Huawei had 8.9% of the global market for smartphones at the end of Q2 2015, right behind Apple and Samsung, according to American market research agency IDC.

In the U.S. market, Huawei is not listed among the top five smartphone brands. The top five brands, Apple, Samsung, LG, Motorola and HTC, account for 88.6% of the overall U.S. market according to comScore, an American digital media analytics company.

The launch of the Nexus 6P will be a chance for Huawei to both increase its international profile and further its position in the U.S. smartphone market.

This latest gesture by Google gives significant recognition to Huawei’s manufacturing abilities and may be a sign of further cooperation between Google and Huawei.

Huawei launched a smartwatch in March equipped with Google’s Android Wear system which many have regarded as a signal of Google’s intentions to re-enter the Chinese market.

The cooperation on Nexus 6P indicates the collaborative relationship between Google and Huawei is strong and shows no sign of weakening.
